| The microalgae Alexandrium minutum produces neurotoxins responsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning, which upon accumulation in shellfish represent a human health risk. This species recurrently forms toxic blooms in the Northern part of the French Brittany coast. At present, algae identification relies on tedious microscope observations mostly performed by skilled taxonomists in laboratories. Newly emerging fields of molecular taxonomy, nanoscale technology and biotechnology offer opportunities for the development of in-situ biosensors for the detection and the monitoring of toxic algae. |

| The understanding of the dominance of one species with respect to others is a pertinent challenge in HAB growth dynamics studies and the nutrient supply mode is one of the factors potentially involved. The competition for phosphorus (P) between a toxic species, Alexandrium minutum, and a non-toxic species, Heterocapsa triquetra, was studied (1) along a gradient of P depletion, (2) testing different P depletion degrees before a single PO4 supply and (3) experimenting different PO4 supply frequencies. | Port activities require continuous or occasional dredging of considerable quantities of sediments : approximately 50 million m3 along the French coastline. A large proportion of the dredgings is authorized for dumping at sea in geographically delimited areas and following an impact evaluation of their potential harmfulness to the marine environment. | Suite à un premier criblage des facteurs environnementaux favorables à la croissance d'Alexandrium minutum comparativement à celle d'une espèce compétitrice en rivière de Penzé, Heterocapsa triquetra (rapport ART3 2002-2003) cette étude vise à préciser et quantifier les réponses physiologiques respectives des deux espèces à différentes conditions d'apports en phosphate (taux de croissance, vitesse d'assimilation des phosphates, capacité à stocker le phosphore intracellulaire). | Les intoxications humaines résultant de la consommation de coquillages sont connues en France depuis plusieurs siècles. On peut supposer que la cause principale a d'abord été d'origine bactériologique, eu égard aux conditions de transport et à l'absence de contrôles de salubrité dans le passé. Quoi qu'il en soit, il faut compter aujourd'hui avec une autre origine, à savoir les proliférations de certaines algues unicellulaires planctoniques (phytoplancton), qui causent dans notre pays jusqu'à plusieurs milliers d'intoxications par an. | Four planktonic coastal ecosystems from the western Channel to the southern part of the North Sea have been compared. The characteristics of the south of the North Sea are a very high planktonic biomass with an annual maximum value of 45 mg C m-3 h-1 for primary production, a maximum of 11 mg m-3 for Chlorophyll a and 60 mg C m-3 for zooplanktonic biomass (expressed in term of carbon weight), linked with an oscillating ecosystem.
